Nasturtiums grown from seed decorate our sunny deck. |
Sit a spell. (See close-ups below of the climbing vines.) |
The 'thank you' part is a little bit of a blessing and way more of a curse...
Clematis climbing vines smile at you from one corner of the deck's privacy screen. |
At least 100 honeysuckle blossoms pretty up the other half of the privacy screen. |
I do love the fact that they're so appreciative of my efforts. Calling out: Beautiful flowers! So pretty! as they peddle by.
This used to be the weedy ditch in front of my house. |
Over the last 2 years, I slowly, methodically, killed off the crabgrass and dandelions covering the steep ditch in front of my house. Then I filled it with tough as nails waterwise perennials that happily wave in the breeze.
Butterflies play there. Bees are a buzzin'. Teeny green Hummingbirds whiz past my head. It's quickly become my favorite spot in the garden. Even if I do feel compelled to comb my hair before I head out there and say hello to passers by...
PS: Welcome back from the Seattle Fling, garden blogging buddies! I pouted all weekend because I couldn't join you...

Rigtig gode billeder.
Hvor har du mange skønne planter.
Jeg kan virkelig godt li` dit andet sidste billede.
Tak for rundvisningen
Hi Kate. Girl your ditch garden looks so beautiful.I can remember when our neighbors were few and far between too.Now there are cabins and tourist everywhere. Even tromping from the woods into my back yard. LOL! I use to love the quiet time here.LOL!
Wow, love the formerly weedy ditch.
What a ditch. No wonder everyone shouts "thanks" and "pretty" at you.
What a nice thing, to hear compliments shouted from passersby as you garden. You do have an awesome ditch! (PS, don't worry about messy hair and rumpled pajamas outside --- no one is looking at you, they are ogling your flowers)
I absolutely love what you've done to your weedy ditch. That's what I'd like to do with my... um, mess. :) You've inspired me and made me believe I can win over the crabgrass and grasshoppers. (I actually like the dandelions!)
Hi, Landbohaven;
Tak, min skat! At næst at vare billede er min fave så godt.
Hey, Hey Lona!
Do not fear if you see some crazy gal sneaking about your gardens at night... I simply must have some of the Cardinal seeds you were showing off this morning. :D
Thanks, Prof!
I'm really loving this crazy mess of primary colors. And, they're getting so feisty they actually weed themselves.
Oh, Lisa!!!
I've been such a terrible blog visitor this summer. But, I think of you every time I'm riding horses in the meadow. There is a stunning yellow bird, with black markings, that chirps (angrily) at us as we pass the swamp. I'll bet you'd know who I'm talkin' about...
Let's truly hope so, Laurrie;
'Cause my cowgirl jammies leave a lot to be desired!
Hi, Snowcatcher!
It's a pretty simple mix. I've never done that before but I just chucked it full of the very, very basics that can put up with things and not require much attention: Catmint, Salvia, Hymenoxys, wild 4 o'clocks and I let the wild asters (which were already there) run wild.
You seem to have created the perfect natural looking garden Kate. Love it.
I stumbled upon your blog when I googled "cassiar highway" and love your beautiful flowers. I blog about my life adventures and one was over the Cassiar in `84. The reason this senior travels slower along the roads is because I don't want to miss a single part of this wonderful country. I'm plan on following you and your gardens.
Thx, Carolyn;
It's been a labor of love.
Nice to meet you, Rilly!
The Cassiar Highway is an amazing place. So nice to find a fellow traveler who has experienced that remote area. The first day driving that road we saw 13 grizzly bears. And, kept the windows rolled up tight! :))
Oh Kate! It would have been great to meet you in Seattle. I had a blast! Hope you can make it next year.
Your ditch garden is magnificent! Too bad there has been so much development around you.
It would have been wonderful to meet you, too, Alison!
But, I've got a 'bucket list' dream vacation coming up this Friday and I just couldn't afford to do both trips. Next year. For. Sure.
Kate girl I think you should be named the "Ditch Goddess"!!! That cottage of yours is beyond gorgeous : )
Are you dusting off some Halloween decorations yet ? less than 96 days until the big one ;-)
I have been thinking of Edward Gory and his creepy creations ? "I just kind of conjured them up out of my subconscious and put them in order of ascending peculiarity" too funny right ?
Joy .. wink wink
Hi, Joy!
Ditch Goddess! I luv it! :)) We need to brainstorm on a blogger meme for Halloween. Who better than us good witches of the east and west??
Your former weedy ditch is gorgeous.
Your garden is so beautiful! The former ditch is gorgeous!
Why thank ya kindly, Sweetbay.
And, you, too, Jan!!
We really should credit the weather more than me. These plentiful rains have made all the gardens so lush and lovely. My flowers are very spoiled this summer...
I love your ditch garden. I'm inspired to do something similar although I don't have a ditch but I'm sure I can emulate its spirit :)
Hi Kate - here I was imagining you enjoying Seattle and I was home in the heat. Maybe we can make next year. I saw that Ashville might be the site for next fling. I have never been in the South, other than, does Florida count? Enjoy your treck - it sounds fun and challenging - Gloria
Hey guys - have you ever thought about why some guys never appear to
have any difficulties in relation to finding out how to
result in the hottest girls chase them. You
don't need to give up dating, mainly because you might have gotten frustrated with singles sites.
