5th Blogoversary!

My how time flies when you're having fun.

May 1st is my 5th Blogoversary

5 years.
700 posts.
Countless new blogging friends.
Thousands of impulse plant purchases.

And, the odd realization that I've been blogging since before blogging was cool.

T-Shirt Give Away. Just leave a comment.
I began this humble effort back in the Dark Ages.

There was no Twitter. No Facebook. (Restricted to college kids at the time.) No Blotanical. No r.e.s.p.e.c.t.  People who knew what blogs were thought I was silly for having one. People who'd never heard of blogs looked at me funny when I tried to explain what they were.

It's loads more fun nowadays. Don't ya just love how big your world becomes when you start blogging? All the kindred spirits you meet? It's like a whole new virtual family. And, you'd never know they existed were it not for their blogs...

5 years. Wow. Who would have thought I could drone on about flowers for 5 long years?

This calls for a celebration.
So, I'm giving away my all-time favorite t-shirt.

Now don't worry. I'm not sending you mine. You're getting a new one. A clean one! But, you'll get to look just like me. Which is a super scary thought...

To enter the drawing for this cute as a button t-shirt, simply leave a comment and tell me what you love most about blogging.

And, to those of you who have visited here before... thanks for being out there. I feel fortunate to have met you.

* My darling daughter will randomly select a winner, from the commenters, next Friday.

I will pass because they do not make them big enough for me but someone is going to get a pretty shirt. I am so glad I found your blog and have so enjoyed reading it and getting to know you. 2. Thanks, Lona!
    I'm glad to have found yours, too. :)) I wish I could say it's warming up but I'm afraid that's not the case. More snow is falling. Such a sorry excuse for April. I sincerely hope May offers up a few warm days in the garden.

  3. Happy FIFTH Blogaversary! Wow! Five years of blogging is awesome. You were doing it when it wasn't cool.

    That's a cute shirt, hope you have one in an extra-large.

    I enjoy your blog immensely. Looking forward to meeting you in person at the Seattle Fling. (I assume you're going since it's in your backyard?)

  6. Congrats, Kate. What I love about blogging is meeting people like you.

    I love reading your blog. It's so down to earth...hahaha...and makes me feel I can do anything in my yard, even if I can't control the weather.

  7. Happy 5th anniversary. I'm sure I had no idea what a blog was 5 years ago!
    I've really loved getting to meet people through blogging. It's especially fun to find someone else who lives in Utah and rides horses!

  9. Thx, Rohrerbot;
    Very kind of you to say. Next winter I'll be spending a month, working in Tucson. We'll have to stay in touch. Perhaps you can give us a garden tour when we're in the 'hood. :D

  10. Thx, Iron!
    I fondly recall our 3 hour breakfast in Salt Lake City!! (Or, was it 4 hours? :)

    It was wonderful morphing from blog buddies to real world friends. I hope you and Jan are coming back this way some time soon.

  11. Hi, Janie!
    Yes, this is a perfect example! Two horse lovers in the same state?? Thank goodness we're both bloggers. I sent a few of my horsie friends your way. We want to go riding with you this summer.

  12. Thx, Jenn;
    I enjoy that beautiful photo you sent me each and every day. You have such a keen eye with the camera. I've really enjoyed getting to know you through your blog. :)

  13. Congratulations on your blogaversary, Kate! Wow, I had no idea you had been blogging that long. I would imagine back then there weren't that many garden bloggers, because I know just in the three years I've been blogging the number has grown exponentially. For me, the best part of blogging is making new friends like you! I always enjoy your witty take on gardening--wishing you many more happy years of blogging.

  14. Thx, Rose!
    I'm glad to have met you, too. Yeah, it was weird in the beginning. I only knew of 2 other garden blogs! Isn't that funny when you consider how there are thousands of them now??

  15. Congratulations! 700 inspiring posts with gorgeous photos! I was hoping that we could have a SLC meet up this summer and see your garden in its summer glory, but it looks like it might be fall before the calendar stars line up. I hope you have a fabulous garden season!

  16. I was awed and amazed at 5 years of blogging, then I realized it was 4 years ago that I made my first blog, a private one to keep in touch with far away kids. They liked my blog so much that they made their own! Time seems to fly... Congrats to you, Kate. I always leave with a smile whenever I visit you. I guess that's what I love about blogging, connecting with and learning new ideas from so many wonderful people... like you!

  17. Hi, Happy Blogoversary. I'm a first time commenter. I enjoy your blog, your adventures, and your gardening ideas. I learn so much from blogs and other blogger's ideas. I used to live in SLC but now am in Co. Still working on finding what grows in my area....

  18. A very happy Blogoversary to you, Kate. You've forged a path as a great role model for the rest of us to follow!

  19. Thx, Jan!
    Oh, I was hoping for that, too, but anytime is a good time for us gals to get together. And, Chez Kate has vacancies, should the sistahs need a place to stay. :))

  20. Thx for the kind compliments, Carolyn;

    I did a similar thing. I had a secret blog, for several years, that was the antithesis of this one. And, it was sooo popular. I guess people just love a train wreck. :))

  21. Hi, Arnie and Melanie;
    I just popped over to visit your blog. I see that we're both avid hikers. And... that's another fine example of why blogging is so much fun! Thanks for the comment. I'm happy to have met you and I look forward to following more of your adventures. (Except for the part about the kid barfing on the table, of course. :)

  22. Thx, Prof;
    I highly doubt I'm a role model for anyone. (And, just the thought of it makes me nervous! :) But, I appreciate the sentiments. How grow the seeds??

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's possible to talk about flowers until the end of time. :) Obviously you are way ahead of your time! What do I love about blogging? getting to post as many pictures as I want, the positive atmosphere surrounding garden blogs, and seeing all of these fantastic gardens from all over the country and the world. And meeting you of course!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aw, thx, Sweetbay, I feel the same way.

    Never stop posting photos! Your garden is a bright spot for me - especially during the long, cold winters!

  25. Happy Blogoversary! 5 years is quite an accomplishment. Some folks don't last a month... I have enjoyed reading your posts and learning from you along the way. My wife will enjoy your shirt!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thx, Redneck :)
    Your roses are so amazing. They always bring a smile when I pay you a visit.

  27. Happy 5th! Sounds like a celebration - fifth? get it? Any who.... I still have friends that think blogging is an odd thing to do. I have enjoyed your blog, flowers, cooking and can hardly wait for the next 5 years. I am glad I found your blog, Kate.

  28. Happy Blogoversary!!! It is always a pleasure to visit your blog every day. I really enjoy it!

  29. Hope you had a wondeful Blogoversary Day!!! You really deserve it!

  30. Thx, Tufa;
    Very sweet of you to say. I find your blog equally entertaining. That Zen-y little touch of the wind chime is so clever. Next time you're road trippin' through TX I hope I can tag along...

  31. Kate, 5 years! Break out the champagne, that's truly special. I've been astounded by how much work blogging has been - somehow I thought this would be easy! But at the same time the benefits have been far more than I expected. The tips, the encouragement, meeting fellow gardening nuts. There's a whole group of people I've learned from and grown to love that I never anticipated.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Champagne is most definitely in order, Marguerite!

    And, you're spot on. It is a lot of work! My passion for it ebbs and flows. I just hope most people understand that between work, life, real world gardening + blogging there are times when you just can't accomplish all the things you'd like to...

    ReplyDelete
  33. 5 in blog years is like 50. You're like a founding father of Utah garden blogs. I'd love to come see your garden someday and pet the horsies.

    What I like about blogging is that I see what other bloggers do with their gardens and it inspires me to push myself a little harder to make my garden, writing, and photography better when I would otherwise be complacent. Your garden has certainly challenged me to get rid of irrigation in areas, which is certainly liberating.

    Happy blogiversary. Here's hoping we're not obsolete in another 5!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi, Susan;
    Loving the idea of blog years, like dog years. :) You are most welcome to come up, we could even ride those horsies, if you're so inclined. :D

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congratulations on your blogoversary!
    (I'd like to come horseriding too.)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thx, Mac;
    Hop a plane and I'll saddle the horsies. :))

  37. Kate girl (will you ship to Canada land ? LOL)
    Happy Blogoversary !! I have been doing it a wee bit longer than you and I felt "Lost in Space" all alone ? haha .. but it was very simple and a way to keep track of my garden at the time.
    Now ? I feel like I have met so many wonderful people it amazes me.
    I have had access to great gardening experience from them all too .. I can't imagine not having a blog now .. it even fills my Halloween fetish when the time is right .. wink wink nudge nudge !!
    Joy : ) giggle snort giggle

  38. Dear Joy, I'd ship myself to Canada land if you'd give me a garden tour! I thought we were both old hats as this bloggin' business... :))

    ReplyDelete
  39. 5 years is a long time to blog. Congrats on your Blogoversary. Please don't put my name into the hat for the drawing. I don't wear tee shirts much. Something about that neckline. What I like about blogging is meeting like-minded people from all over the world and hearing about their way of life. Like you for instance. I can go horsing around without having to saddle up or picking myself up off the ground. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thx, Lisa
    But I thought we were going birding by horseback. Plz reconsider. :))

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congrats on five years! (Not saying that for the giveaway, either...) I thought I was pretty hot for nearly hitting two years. :) They say the average blog lasts less than seven months. So we're both in it for the long run! Very cool!

  42. Why thank ya kindly, Snowcatcher.

    I love blogging and the people I meet blogging (you included.) In fact I've been reading your blog for so long that I am now tempted -- okay, slightly tempted -- to take on an embroidery project! Or, maybe I'll just start riding my bike again. See how influential you are?

  43. I'm glad I scrolled down a ways. I have so many blogs I follow, that I physically can't keep up with them. Congratulations on your 5th blog anniversary! I didn't know what blogging was until 2 and a half years ago, when some ivillage cottage garden forum folks like Nell Jean and Cameron gave us links and encouragement to start one.

    I hope you have a good garden season.
