Wordless Wednesday: Flor de la Noche Buena





Ever wonder what's up with those brightly colored Poinsettia blooms?

In her natural state, she'll show off green, red and mottled leaves.
 Poinsettias are simply celebrating what we humans are lamenting ~ the long, dark days of winter.

* Flor de la Noche Buena means Flower of the Holy Night. Introduced to the US by the Minister of Mexico in 1828. Another fine reason for us to stop being so damned prejudiced.

    My favorite are the red with white splotches. I had not seen one like your first photo before. It is very pretty also.

    Wonderful plants, I'm quite fond of classic red but the spotted red one is pretty spectacular.

    I've been seeing some new colors this year, colors I've never seen in poinsettias before. But I think the blotchy red ones are still my favs. I personally went nuts with Christmas cacti. We buy a new one every Christmas, and for the past couple of years, we've had to do some cuttings and replantings, so now I have about triple what I expected to have by now! But, that seriously is NOT a complaint!
