Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day ~ April, 2011

Things are just getting started at my place. With the weather finally cooperating, I donned those much missed and very tattered garden gloves to clean up the first of the beds. 1 down, 11 to go. The bulbs are beating me to it, this year. Blooming without the usual TLC from me.

Grecian Windflower (the whities are heirlooms)
Peeking out from beneath the debris were these fancy little Windflowers.

Peter Pan Heirloom Crocus
Pretty white Crocus trying hard to steal the show but ~ up until yesterday ~ she was flowering in the snow. I didn't even see her until the last of it melted.

Rip Van Winkle Heirloom Daffodil
This is my "I Wish I Had More Money Garden," hence the reason it's so sparse. :) I'm madly in love with Old House Bulbs ~ their stuff is a little spendy but well worth the expense ~ seeing as how all of these bulbs will multiply over time.

Primrose
I was up early, traipsing around with the camera, shivering on a 30 degree morning, feeling extra proud of this band of bright bloomers.

We've had an unusually cold winter.

An unseasonably cold spring.

Though that seems to bother me a whole lot more than it bothers the flowers!

It's as if they have little wrist watches attached to their roots. No matter the weather, they're always happy to put on a pretty show.

Pay a visit to Carol @ May Dreams Gardens to meet more flower lovers participating in Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.

And, I'll leave with a mystery bloomer. A mystery to me, that is. I can't remember her name. Perhaps you know?

Very pretty flowers, especially that white windflower. I've had the purple ones, but I've never seen white.

I think your mystery bulb is Chionodoxa.

Good morning Kate. Now I think that white crocus is so beautiful. Love white blooms. The Windflowers are so pretty. I cannot grow the silly things for some reason. They start growing and then just die every time.
Your spring blooms are starting to grow so well now. Always makes you feel good when things start growing again. Have a wonderful weekend!

Ah ha! Chionodoxa. I should have known that. Even with gardening... sometimes it takes a village... Thanks and Happy Bloom Day!

With all these pretty little bloomers, spring is surely on its way to you, Kate. I love those Grecian windflowers; I've never had much luck with them, but perhaps I should try again. I'll second--or third--the motion that your mystery flower is a Chionodoxa. I have a lot of mysteries or surprises like that every spring, too--bulbs I don't remember planting at all:)

Yay for blooms and no snow. That should get your creative urges going. Did your Dahlia come up? Happy GBBD. I am glad you are birding or at least seeking out / learning the birds nearby. I have always wanted to bird by horseback. One of our favorite parks has horse trails. It didn't for years now the horses keep the trails passable as the trails used to grow up in summmer. Just makes me think it would be a good thing birding on horseback.

I love the white crocus!! I have been wanting to add crocus to my garden ... now I think I have to motivation to do just that. Old House Gardens IS the best!! I heard Scott Kunst speak at a garden conference a few years ago, and I absolutely fell in love. What a nice guy, and his bulbs are superb.

I love those windflowers. Also, what an interesting daffodil. Do you know what variety it is? Despite the cold, you've got a lot of color there!

Hi Kate, it might be too cold there vs the very hot here, but i love the colors in your garden. Even if i see crocus in all temperate country blogs they are not boring yet. Plus the tomato and beans in your older post are also wonderful. Do you also receive very lovely sunsets there? Try to see ours here in the tropics? hehe, thanks.

Hi Kate, Your flowering bulbs are very pretty signs that spring is finally here. Spring is arriving super late here as well. Very little is in bloom. Hopefully the weather will improve next week.

I concur your mystery blooms look like chinadoxia to me. I'm wishing now I had planted more early bulbs as I've yet to see any blooms yet. Something to mark down for next fall.

I found you through bloom day- I love your blog- I've never been tempted by windflowers from the catalog pictures, but having seen yours, they are going on my list this year. Purple, definitely.

Kate, glad to see you too are finally getting a few spring blooms. I love your windflowers. They remind me of African daisies.

Aw, Kate, the flowers are beautiful. Today was the first really perfect spring day, spent it outside planting seed, digging beds, painting hanging planters, in the greenhouse, put more seeds into pots. I hope to post about it in the morning, getting to tired now.
Sending hugs from Wy. BTW, the holly hocks are coming up. Yippee
Maybe in a couple weeks I will have flowers to share.
